Research In Motion limited (RIM) announced the availability of Blackberry OS 5 software update for its Storm 9530 series and other selected Blackberry smartphones. Blackberry OS 5 development that started early this year, had completed its definite stage development and is now ready to be rolled out. Verizon Wireless is the first operator to announce OS 5 update to its Blackberry Storm 9530 customers in US. OTA updates are not available at this time. So Windows and Mac users should install Blackberry desktop manger, and then download and proceed with the installation of Blackberry OS 5. RIM also released a list of Blackberry devices compatible with OS 5 update. The upcoming Blackberry smartphones Bold 9700 and Blackberry Storm2 will be shipped with Blackberry OS 5 pre-installed .

After making itself the first Indian company to provide 24 mbps broadband internet, the state owned BSNL today announced its plans to launch prepaid broadband across different parts of the country. BSNL prepaid broadband plan will be first available in Karnataka and later will be expanded to other Indian states. All existing BSNL broadband customers and those who have BSNL landline connection can apply for BSNL prepaid broadband . The special about prepaid broadband is that we don’t need to worry about the broadband usage and the connection can be carried to any location in India . In total there will be 13 prepaid broadband tariff plans which can be activated using corresponding recharge vouchers . Unlimited plans are also available with BSNL prepaid broadband .
Currently more than 90 % of the mobile users in India are with prepaid connections. By announcing the prepaid broadband facilities, BSNL expect a wide range of customers who are reluctant to postpaid broadband services. Though you need BSNL landline, the facility to use recharge vouchers enable customers to access broadband facilities anywhere with ease and less expenditure. Landlines used by the prepaid connection will not be billed as its not tied to any specific number. A DSL connection from any of the 25000 supported telephone exchanges in India are suitable for BSNL prepaid broadband plan . This plan is well suited for hostlers and periodic broadband users who don’t need dedicated internet connectivity all the time. Presently two prepaid connections can taken with one BSNL landline.
How to get BSNL prepaid broadband :
As we said earlier this facility is currently limited to BSNL users in Karnataka. Interested landline customers can book the service by sending PPB to 9448077777 or by visiting nearest BSNL customer relations center .The service will activated after successful verification, and each users will be provided with username and password . Speed of initial connection will be 2mbps with 15 days validity and 50 MB free download. There will be top up coupons and prepaid recharge vouchers that users can select to upgrade, downgrade or extend broadband plans .

Microsoft today launched Windows 7, the next generation operating system that will follow Windows Vista and Windows XP. Microsoft started beta testing of Windows 7 on the beginning of this year, which so far crossed 8 million in number of testers. Windows 7 has a new streamlined user interface, performance upgrades, touch support and couple of new features. As per Microsoft Windows 7 is not a major Windows upgrade, but tweaked version of Windows Vista that covers and fixes the disadvantage it had. More than 80% of beta testers agreed with this argument and they certified Windows 7 as the best Windows after Windows XP. Hardware requirements of Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit versions remains the same as in Windows Vista . On the software side , users can even run applications wrote for Windows XP using the XP mode . Confirming the global announcement , Microsoft India also came up with country specific price and versions of Windows 7 .

Apple today announced the updated version of iMac desktop systems with of 21.5 inch and 27 inch LED-backlit displays redesigned with aluminum enclosure.The new iMac lineup will have most powerful Intel processors and extreme graphic processing capabilities with ATI Radeon HD and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M dedicated chips . Another feature of the new iMac is the magic mouse, which the first such device in the world with multi-touch technology .They also announced updated versions for Mac mini, the smallest and energy efficient desktop computer series from Apple. New Mac mini desktops will have Intel Core 2 Duo processors, increased memory and storage space with almost the same price of the old model .There is also a new Mac mini server configuration with with extra storage space. Both iMac 21.5 -27 inch and Mac mini models will be equipped with the latest Snow Leopard OS from Apple for free.

Nokia 5800 , Nokia N97 ,HTC Hero and many other phones were referred as iPhone killers , though none of them impressed much as expected . We know that Google and Microsoft are not much happy with the enormous growth of iPhone in world market since both of them own mobile operating systems . There would not be any official Google phone or Microsoft phone in near future. But both companies supports their partners to build competitive smartphones that could beat Apple iPhone and Nokia’s Symbian platform . Motorola Droid is the latest example one such phone ,which is Android based and supported by Google . We have earlier covered the First Motorola Android phone CLIQ that already went on sales though T-mobile USA .Motorola Droid will be first available for Verizon customers of US itself . Motorola and Verizon published the specifications of the phone and launched a promo website that compares the phone with iPhone . Have a look at them .

MOTOBLUR technology that was first announced with CLIQ is not much prominent from the first screenshots of Droid .But as per announcement it includes widget support and inbuilt social media applications .Motorola Droid will be powered by Android 2.0 , the next edition of the popular open source mobile OS . It will also have a good processor with graphics processing and multi-taking features.
Spec sheet indicates that Motorola Droid is just another high-end Android smartphone similar to HTC Hero . It will have 5 mega pixel camera with dual LED flash , 3.7 inch display , 16GB inbuilt memory, WiFi ,GPS ,slidout QWERTY keypad , speech recognition, Google applications, and high speed data connectivity . The CDMA version of Droid will be launched by Verizon Wireless and Motorola on October 30 . There is also a chance for GSM version like in the case of Palm Pre ,in coming few months .

Droid will be available from this November 6 for all Verizon customers 199 $ with 2 year contract . When it come India , we don’t have any Motorola Android phone released here . So far we have HTC Hero , HTC Magic ,Samsung Galaxy in the India Android phone segment. As the price of iPhone and Hero is around 32000 , we expect Motorola Droid to cost around the same range in India . The launch date could extend to the first quarter of 2010 .

Blackberry Storm 2 9550 and 9520 smartphones launched

The Blackberry Storm is the first touch enabled Blackberry phone, with large high resolution screen, better connectivity, and new Surepress technology that bring keypad like experience in touch enabled handsets. However, many users complained about the non responsive touch screen of Blackberry storm, which makes numerous errors while typing on it. Since the heart of Blackberry is messaging, the storm failed to impress people in several aspects. Moreover, the original storm lacks Wi-Fi connectivity. RIM later fixed several issues with Storm and released Blackberry Storm 2. The new device was launched in US on October of 2009. Blackberry storm 2 includes a redesigned Surepress technology, Wi-Fi and Blackberry OS 5.0. There will be two models of Blackberry Storm 2, 9550 and 9520 based on the network connectivity available in different regions.
