iOS 4.0 download
Apple today announced the most awaited iOS 4.0 update for iPhone 3G, iPhone 3G S, iPod Touch 2G and 3G ( 3rd generation) devices. All iDevice users can now download and update their device OS to the latest version. Apple iOS 4.0 is considered as major update, and it runs perfectly on iPhone 3G S and iPhone 4. Few other devices can also download iOS 4.0, but there would be some limitation in functionality. Before download, make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes (9.2) installed. The procedure of iOS 4.0 installation is the same as you might have done for older versions. However, downloading iOS 4.0 from Apple servers would take much time. And there is a chance for it start from the beginning, if something happens in between. How to install iOS 4.0 manually using .ipsw installer:
After download, open iTunes and click on device section. Now select your iPhone/iPod Touch from the left menu. Apple will show a message that a new OS update is available for your device. Just ignore that warning. Now backup your iPhone / iPod touch contacts, messages, email, purchased apps and other settings. The next step is to hold your shift button and click on the restore button. Using the explorer open the location of iOS 4.0 download and restore. Wait for iTunes to compare iOS 4.0 offline installation.
Update: Apple released iOS 4.2.1 for iPhone 4, iPad, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S and iPod Touch 4G and 3G.

The iOS 4 release for the iPad is supposed to be in the fall. I wonder if Apple is just holding it off merely to spread out the interest or is the iPad’s OS that different. I figured the iPhone’s OS would be more complex than the iPad’s since the iPhone can do so much more.

I would not advise using this method to update your iPhone. A lot of the settings on mine were knackered afterwards and I had to reset.
We tested iOS 4.0 in our iPhone 3G S and iPod 16GB 3rd generation device. Everything is working fine. Please take backup before updating your OS. Also please make sure that you download the correct version of iOS 4.0. The OS is not fully supported by iPod 2G and few other devices.

Gold Master which is the term used by software developers for final shipping code. They use of this release to make their apps compatible with latest OS. Both GM and final version of iOS 4.0 has same version number (8A293). But you cannot download GM directly from Apple servers, as its accessible only for those users with developer account. The final version of iOS 4.0 ( given here) is not GM. That’s why its open for direct download.
so, right now, if i DL the ios4 here, that means i have the final version even though it’s the exact name as the gold version… ? what do you think i should do, restore my phone or keep it the way it is (even though it doesn’t really matter, i’m getting the iphone 4 in 2 days…) thanks
anyhow, i just wanna thank you, because without you posting the final ios4, i would have maybe restored my phone and i would have lost 4 months of data, but because it was already not working, i decided to try your ios4 and upgrade instead or restore and it worked, so thanks a lot…, = ) !

GM is only available for developers. It is almost the same thing, but it has Game Center app in it. The final build of iOS 4.0 doesn’t have Game Center. It would be available soon as an update. Just connect your updated iPhone to iTunes and click check for update. It will show your version of iPhone software (4.0) is the current version.

i dont know if i did this right.. it just restored my phone to factory senting.. is that right.. now do i hit restore from back up? when the phone came on it looked different but then it went to the restore mode.. should i stop it??? HELP !!!!

@mobi: well, i didn’treally notice any signal drop when i held my iphone 4, but now i have an iphone 4 silicon/hard back case, so i don’t know if that should also affect the iphone’s signal… ! Maybe the drop of the signal is true, and maybe it’s done on purpous so that people have to buy cases, who knows…, ha ha ha !
why did installing 4.0 chang my ipod model from MB to MC?…
Mines didnt work i downloaded the firmware but when i press Shift and Restore when it tells me to find it in my documents.
When i tried to restore with 4.0 it came across an error. Any help?
