The iPhone-Dev team today released an updated version of Redsn0w that can be used to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1. The new Redsn0w 0.9.6 b4 enables iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. It is based on Geohot’s iboot exploit in Limera1n, and is a tethered jailbreak. So if you are rebooting your jailbroken idevice, you should be near a PC or Mac to take it to the jailbreak mode. However, Redsn0w 0.9.6 b4 support un-tethered jailbreak on iPhone models with old iBoot ROM and in iPod Touch 2G models. So until someone releases a complete working untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2, Redsn0w 0.9.6 b4 is the only option to get Cydia working in your device. Apple introduced a new ebook reader application called iBooks in iOS 4.0. The iBooks app works in iPhone 4, 3G S, iPod Touch 4G, iPad and all other compatible iOS devices. It has a more user friendly interface than traditional iOS ebook apps like Stanza, Kindle, etc., and it comes with a real book like transition effects, inbuilt dictionary, fast scrolling and lots more features. Similar to the Amazon Kindle and the Sony Reader, the default format for ebooks in an iBooks library is ePUB, but it also supports PDF formats. The visual transitions and the inbuilt dictionary check facility in iBooks works only with books in the ePUB format. Other document formats like DOC, DOCX, RTF, TFT should be converted to the ePUB or at least PDF to get them work on iBooks for iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

Apple finally released iOS 4.0.1 software update for iPhone 4, iPhone 3G S and iPhone 3G. The iOS 4.0.1 (build number 8A306 ) is a special iPhone only update that fixes the issues related with wireless reception. The official changelog indicate that the iOS 4.0.1 corrects the wrong formula, that is being used in iOS 4.0 to calculate the signal bar strength. Even though, iOS 4.0.1 will not fix the antenna reception issue, which is a part of the iPhone 4 hardware.
